Congratulations to Brian Fay who played a key role in Ireland's silver medal team performance at today's European Cross country championships in Lagoa, Portugal.
Fay, the recently crowned National senior cross country champion (picture above shows him winning that race) was tenth overall and the second Irish scorer on a great day for Irish athletics.
Conditions in Portugal were the polar opposition to the wet, rain and mud athletes experienced by the athletes at the National championships in Derry.

In the senior's men race in Portugal Mullingar Harriers' Jack O'Leary was fifth, following by Fay whose tenth position equalled his finishing place from 2021.

He was just ahead of Irish team mate Cormac Dalton. The team bunched remarkably well with Darragh McElhinney 16th and Efrem Gidey 19th. Only the top three scorers count which left Ireland with a total of 26 points, ten behind gold medallist Spain with France winning bronze with 37 points. It was Ireland's first team medal in the senior men's race for 25 years.

Earlier Nick Grigg won the U-23 race and led Ireland to the gold medal in the team event while 16-year-old Emma Hickey won a bronze medal in the U-20 women's race.
