A huge crowd showed up yesterday for the Raheny Shamrock promoted GOAL Mile in St Annes on Christmas Day . Seasoned observers of the event estimated a figure of close to 2,000 participants in the annual pageant of goodwill and festive cheer.
The Annual race down the Main Avenue was 1st run on Christmas Day 1972 and quickly became a staple of Christmas for Raheny Athletes. 21 years ago GOAL piggybacked it’s way on to the event and was warmly welcomed aboard.
The business end of the event resulted in a first ever victory for Luke Murphy, home in Ireland for Christmas after three years living and training in Australia. Into a stiff headwind Murphy’s 3.50 winning time pulled him clear of two of the Club’s emerging Juniors Charlie Gunawardhana and Mark O’Callaghan.
There was a familiar winner of the Women’s race as Siobhan Eviston showed her great fondness for Lord Ardilaun’s piece of tarmac. Her winning time of 4.37 saw her add to her previous wins of 2011, 2017 and 2018. Not far behind and 1st Junior was Georgina Bruen Liston.
